Schedule vs Habit?

Tried writing this morning instead of my usual 8 at night. It was a struggle, but I finally got some traction before I had to stop.

Then it was time to start on my “day job” a/k/a writing for clients.

Round Two

Then, tonight I got to the writing a little earlier than normal. I’m glad I did…seems if I wait until 8 pm, the hour zooms by and it’s time for bed. Yes, I go to bed around 9:30 or so. It works for me, because I get up around 6:00. And my sleep is sometimes interrupted, but yada, yada, you know what I mean.

So, finally on to the point I want to make about a habit vs a schedule.

Habits are great, but it’s a struggle to build good habits, so until writing actually becomes a habit, I’ve read somewhere the idea of adding it to my schedule, which I am trying to do. I don’t have as consistent of a schedule as I’d like, but progress, not perfection, am I right?

So for example, although I’ve set 8 pm as my “scheduled writing time”, I’m keeping my eyes out for time I can capture elsewhere. The idea is that no matter what, during the “scheduled time” I’ll get something done.

It’s all mush in my brain right now, as I’m literally writing this before going to bed, but the bottom line is that I’m working more on my stuff – even if I don’t “feel” like it – because I’ve added it to the schedule.

Another bonus? Because it’s on “the schedule” it doesn’t matter if I’ve got the “feels” for it…it’s gotta get done. Fortunately, the “feels” comes along pretty quickly once I begin. Truly, they do come along for the ride!

Come along with me!
